Independent Local Market in Sumner County

Opening a new business in the middle of a pandemic can be a risk not many want to make, but Michele Harbin is bold and it’s paying off. Michele opened Harbin Hollow, a small local market in Sumner County, in September of 2020. Harbin Hollow Local Market in Portland is an independent specialty grocery store. They carry their own product line, as well as other local products.

Michele started selling elderberry and honey bee products in 2019, which lead to the creation of this quaint grocery store. The product line is all-natural with health and wellness in mind and includes elderberry syrup, raw honey, and more.

She chose Portland because of her roots. “I am a Sumner County girl, raised in Hendersonville and Goodlettsville, but moved to Portland in 2013. My in-laws live here and four generations of us live on 8 acres. We have decided to raise our kids here and are fully invested in the community.” In fact, her entire mission is about supporting small and local businesses, allowing her to help “stimulate the local economy exponentially compared to a shop that sources inventory elsewhere.”

Currently, Harbin Hollow sells elderberry syrup and superfood preserves as well as local, raw honey and bee pollen. Yes, that’s right – they are the source of their honey and pollen, through beekeeping, and also selling beekeeping supplies. The majority of Harbin Hollow’s inventory is sourced from Tennessee and Kentucky small businesses.

Product Line
